Description
This tour takes you into the beautiful countryside of Lazio where olive vineyards will line the roads of your visit to the towns of Calcata and Sutri Viterbo.
CALCATA
You will meet our driver at your hotel (or an alternative pick up point) in Rome for 9:00Am with the return is scheduled at 5:00Pm.
The first stop is Calcata, a small medieval village perched on top of a volcanic rock, surrounded by dense vegetation.
The characteristic and amazing charming alleys give us a splendid view over the valley. We will also visit the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus (Santissimo Nome di Gesù) restored in 1793, visit some local shops where you can buy precious souvenirs to remember your visit.
SUTRI
Our tour continues to the city of Sutri, Etruscan archaeological site known worldwide for its Roman amphitheater carved into the stone and the Etruscan necropolis which has a dozen tombs, carved out of the tufa rock.
We visit the beautiful and imposing Cathedral of Romanesque whose origins rich in artistic treasures like the statue of Santa Dolcissima of Bernini's school. Another important Church is that of the Madonna del Parto built on the site of an ancient Etruscan tomb of the medieval period is covered with frescoes. How about a visit to the magnificent amphitheater, its appeal will leave you with wonderful memories of of your visit.
VITERBO
Leaving Sutri walk the Cassia to go to Viterbo ancient city also known as the city of the Popes, as it is located between two lakes, that of Bolsena and Vico.
How about making a choice for your lunch time, you can choose from many of the local resturants, or how about our recommendation.
We continue our tour towards Piazza del Plebiscito here are the symbols of Viterbo lions and palm trees, the Papal palace large building with a Gothic tower, erected by Cardinal Alboronoz, where over time it has undergone several modifications and extensions by Pope Alexander VI and Julius II and John XXI. We will visit the Basilica of Santa Maria greets us with both white marble and Gothic Red.
Finally we find the house of Santa Rosa protector of the city of Viterbo each year on September 3 an imposing statue of the saint (called Santa Rosa) 28 metres high, which is carried during processions through the streets of the city held up by 100 people who support its five ton weight , an absolutely facinating show.
